Association between AA-NAT gene polymorphism and reproductive performance in sheep Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Ding-ping,Bai; Cheng-jiang,Yu; Yu-lin,Chen.
Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT) is critical enzyme in Melatonin (MLT) biosynthesis for MLT regulating the animal seasonal breeding. In this study, DNA sequencing methods were applied to detect the polymorphisms of the AA-NAT gene in 179 Chinese sheep belonging to two non-seasonal reproduction breeds and two seasonal reproduction breeds. One mutation at exon 3 (NM_001009461:c.486A > G) was firstly described at the sheep AA-NAT locus. Hence, we described the SmaI PCR-RFLP method for detecting EX3 486A > G mutation, frequencies of the AA-NAT-G allele varied from 0.871 to 0.908 in two non-seasonal reproduction breeds and...

Sexual reproduction and ecophysiology of the marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum Halim ArchiMer
Probert, Ian.
As part of their sexual life cycle form dinoflagellate species form resistant resting stages (hypnozygote cysts) which are important in their ecology. The factors inducing sexual reproduction (and hence encystment) have not been clearly defined and conflicting information exists from laboratory and field observations. Nutrient deficiency in growth medium is commonly used in laboratory dinoflagellate cultures to induce sexual reproduction, but field observations of encystment have been made in conditions of apparent nutrient sufficiency. The aim of this project is to investigate the factors which trigger sexual reproduction in coastal dinoflagellates.

Defining the reproductive period of freshwater fish species using the Gonadosomatic Index: a proposed protocol applied to ten species of the Patos Lagoon basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Fontoura,Nelson Ferreira; Ceni,Gianfranco; Braun,Aloisio Sirangelo; Marques,Camilla da Silva.
ABSTRACT This contribution records the reproductive periods of ten dominant freshwater fish species from the Patos Lagoon and Guaíba Lake (Astyanax fasciatus, Cyphocharax voga, Hoplias malabaricus, Oligosarcus jenynsii, Oligosarcus robustus, Hoplosternum littorale, Loricariichthys anus, Parapimelodus nigribarbis, Trachelyopterus lucenai, Pachyurus bonariensis). Data were derived from monthly samples in Casamento Lake (northern Patos Lagoon; Nov. 2002 to Apr. 2004) and Guaíba Lake (Jun. 2005 to May 2006). The reproductive period was determined according to the monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index (GSI). Fish reproduction was identified during all months of the year. Oligosarcus jenynsii started

Devauchelle, Nicole.
Optimal gametogenesis and egg-laying environment, fertility, number of egg-layings, reproductor ageing, relationship between parent characteristics and conditioning and farming success, are the main issues considered by bivalve hatcheries each time the reproduction of a species is taken care of. Even if there is still very little bibliographic data on this precise field, reproduction mechanisms have been studied for decades in Mytilidae and Ostreidae. Largely cultivated in open sea, they are indeed an experimental material of choice. In this paper, we will see how the acquired knowledge and the methods developed on this material can be used to carry out a study on bivalve

Ratiskol, Jacqueline; Faury, Nicole.

Sow body condition at weaning and reproduction performance in organic piglet production Organic Eprints
Kongsted, A.G.; Hermansen, J.E..
The objective was to investigate the variation in backfat at weaning and its relations to reproduction results in organic sow herds in Denmark. The study included eight herds and 573 sows. The average backfat at weaning mean13 mm; SD4.2 mm) ranging from 10.5 to 17.3 mm among herds shows that it is possible to avoid poor body condition at weaning even with a lactation length of seven weeks or more. No main effect of backfat at weaning on reproduction performance was found, but the probability of a successful reproduction after weaning tended to decrease with decreasing backfat for first parity sows, whereas the opposite was the case for multiparous sows.

Maternal oxidative stress and reproduction: testing the constraint, cost and shielding hypotheses in a wild mammal ArchiMer
Viblanc, Vincent A.; Schull, Quentin; Roth, Jeffrey D.; Rabdeau, Juliette; Saraux, Claire; Uhlrich, Pierre; Criscuolo, François; Dobson, F. Stephen.
1.Oxidative stress has been proposed as a central causal mechanism underlying the life history trade-off between current and future reproduction and survival in wild animals. 2.Whereas mixed evidence suggests that maternal oxidative stress may act both as a constraint and a cost to reproduction, some studies have reported a lack of association between reproduction and maternal oxidative stress. 3.The oxidative shielding hypothesis offers an alternative explanation, suggesting that mothers may pre-emptively mitigate the oxidative costs of reproduction by increasing antioxidant defences prior to

Cycle de reproduction naturelle de l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe.
Since its introduction to French coasts in the 1970s, Crassostrea gigas completes its reproductive cycle—i.e. regular annual recruitment and establishment of natural populations—in only two sectors (Charentes coast and Arcachon Bay). In other areas of Pacific oyster production (Normandy, Brittany, Vendée, Mediterranean), complete gametogenesis may occur, resulting in spawning events and even recruitment in favourable temperatures. Temperature seems to be the main limiting factor for in situ reproduction. Growth and reproduction occur simultaneously. The study of the reproductive cycle of one-year old oysters showed that gametogenesis was asynchronous with high interannual variability and...

Sexual and asexual reproduction in Didemnum rodriguesi (Ascidiacea, Didemnidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ritzmann,Nicole F.; Rocha,Rosana M. da; Roper,James J..
Sexual and asexual reproduction and associated population dynamics were investigated in the colonial ascidian Didemnum rodriguesi Rocha & Monniot, 1993 (Didemnidae) in southern Brazil. Investment in sexual (production of new individuals) and asexual (colony growth) reproduction was compared between seasons. Permanently marked quadrats were repeatedly photographed to measure changes in colonies. Eggs and larvae were counted monthly in collected colonies. This species alternates seasonally between sexual (summer) and asexual (winter) reproduction. In summer, colonies were smaller, brooded eggs and larvae and recruitment rates were greater, while in...

A novel neuropeptide Y neuronal pathway linking energy state and reproductive behavior OAK
Muroi, Yoshikage; Ishii, Toshiaki.
Animals consume energy for reproduction, as well as survival. Excess or insufficient energy investment into reproduction, respectively, threatens the survival of parents or leads to the failure of reproduction. Management of energy consumption in reproduction is important, not only for the success of the process, but also for the survival of the parents. Reproductive behaviors, such as mating and parental behavior, are indispensable for achieving each event of reproduction including gametogamy, parturition, and lactation. Therefore, reproductive behavior is one of the important factors in...

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Weight, Reproduction, and Wool Traits of Suffolk Sheep OAK
Genetic parameters on weight, reproduction, and wool traits were estimated using REML for Suffolk sheep from data collected from 1980 to 1996 at the Takikawa Livestock Research Station. Estimates of direct heritabilities for weight traits from single-trait analyses increased with age in day from 0.15 to 0.31. On the contrary, estimates of maternal heritabilities decreased with age in day from 0.24 to 0.09. Additionally, estimates of direct-maternal genetic correlations for weight traits were changed from positive to negative with increasing age in day(0.21→-0.42). Estimates of direct heritabilities for reproduction traits were all low (0.03∼0.18) and for wool traits were all high...

Intra-specific brood parasitism revealed by DNA micro-satellite analyses in a sub-oscine bird, the vermilion flycatcher RChHN
RÍOS-CHELÉN,ALEJANDRO A; GRAVES,JEFFERSON A; TORRES,ROXANA; SERRANO-PINTO,MIGUEL; D'ALBA,LILIANA; MACÍAS GARCÍA,CONSTANTINO.
Extra-pair reproduction is known to occur in many avian species. However, among passerines, the majority of studies on extra-pair reproduction have been carried out in oscine birds from temperate regions. Conversely, sub-oscines species, and particularly, species that inhabit tropical regions, have been studied to a much lesser extent. Given that a majority of avian species live in the tropics, it is important to study more tropical and sub-oscine species to have a more accurate picture of the rates of extra-pair reproduction among passerines, and a better understanding of the adaptive function of extra-pair reproduction...

Towards a unified terminology for angiosperm reproductive systems Acta Botanica
Cardoso,João Custódio Fernandes; Viana,Matheus Lacerda; Matias,Raphael; Furtado,Marco Túlio; Caetano,Ana Paula de Souza; Consolaro,Hélder; Brito,Vinícius Lourenço Garcia de.
ABSTRACT Angiosperms display an enormous diversity of forms, functions and strategies when it comes to reproduction. This multiplicity has been translated into several terminological concepts and contexts, which have facilitated further research. On the other hand, the use of terms that address the reproduction of flowering plants has been shown to be inconsistent in the literature, complicating communication among specialists. Key terms, such as “reproductive system”, “mating system” and “sexual system”, among others, have been frequently cited as synonyms, and even used in different circumstances. This review proposes to establish a consistent nomenclatural classification in the field of...

Heurtebise, Serge; Ratiskol, Jacqueline.
